No contract was signed Monday that would have made Interim Town Manager John Eldridge the official, permanent manager.
“It seemed imprudent to do it in a hurried fashion with two councilors absent,” said chairman Benet Pols, in an interview Monday.
Two councilors — Sarah Brayman and John Richardson — were unable to attend the executive session initially planned for 6 p.m.
Pols said the delay would allow more time for the council to review recently obtained information on comparative salaries.
The council must also decide how to handle about 1,000 hours worth of backlogged vacation time Eldridge has accrued. Town policy states only 240 hours of vacation time can be carried over a year.
Eldridge has been the town’s finance director for the last 26 years, and the interim town manager since February, taking over for Gary Brown.
Pols said he expected the contract to be revisited when the council meets for a workshop next week.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
