Rick Bartlett’s Mt. Ararat High School golf team surprised him by winning the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference qualifier on Tuesday.
Thoughts of a repeat on Saturday in the State Class A Team Championship might have danced through the heads of the Eagles.
Mt. Ararat had to settle for seventh place in Class A, finishing with a team score of 334 on the Tomahawk Course at Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro.
Scarborough claimed the Class A title, holding on for a two-shot win over runners-up Greely and Falmouth, 318-320. Thornton Academy (322) was fourth, with Gorham (327) in fifth. Marshwood (330), Mt. Ararat (334), Bangor (336), Messalonskee (342) and Oceanside (344) rounded out the top 10.
“We beat all the KVAC teams involved,” said Bartlett of his Eagles, who were awarded the Eastern Class A Sportsmanship Award. “The kids worked hard. This is just a great group of kids. They wanted to get better throughout the year and they did.”
The low individual round of the day in Class A went to Oceanside’s Nick Mazurek, who shot a 2-under par 70.
Scarborough rode the consistent play of its top four golfers. Drew Kane (75), Mitchell Wedge (80), Braeden Kane (81) and Nate Roberts (82) helped the Red Storm to the win.
Cam Cox paced Mt. Ararat with a solid round of 77. Tyler O’Connor and TJ Ackerman had matching 83s, while Steve Schuman shot a 91. Jason Magno also played for the Eagles, finishing with a 104.
“Cam had a great two days up there, and Tyler on Saturday was 8-over par through eight holes and rallied to go 3- over over the final 10 holes,” said Bartlett.
The State Individual Championship is slated for this upcoming Saturday at Natanis, with O’Connor, Cox and Ackerman in the field.
Class B and C
Camden Hills shot the low round of the day to capture the Class B championship at Tomahawk.
The Windjammers finished at 313, with Daulton Wickenden finishing with a 3-under par 69.
Cape Elizabeth was 14 shots back at 327 for second, while Maine Central Institute took third at 329.
In Class C, played on the Arrowhead Course, Mountain Valley Conference champion Winthrop rolled to a ninestroke win, outpacing runner-up St. Dom’s, 315-324.
Taylor Morang had a 4-under par 68 to lead the Ramblers.
Houlton finished in third.
