BATH

We have all had them, a day where nothing seemed to go right no matter what we tried.

The Morse High School football team had one of those nights on Friday, as Westbrook came to McMann Field and rolled to a 49-0 Class B South victory.

Prior to the game, the Shipbuilders celebrated Senior Night. It was all downhill from there. The Morse offense began the game with the ball, ran three plays that netted one yard, followed by a high snap on a punt that resulted in the Blue Blazes beginning their opening drive at the Morse 2-yard line.

It took one play as running back Nemieceo Loureiro plowed into the end zone for a 7- 0 lead just 1:06 into the contest.

“Senior Night is always emotional and we didn’t do a good job managing that tonight,” said Morse coach Jason Darling. “That really showed in that first drive. We need to limit mistakes. We had too many of them tonight, and when you make them against a good team, this is what happens.”

Morse’s second drive went two yards before a punt, and Westbrook drove 62 yards on nine plays, with Loureiro scoring his second of four touchdowns on the night.

Westbrook (5-2) put this one away in the second quarter. Leading 14-0, Hayden Phelps found the end zone twice (14 and 25 yards) for a 28-0 advantage, and Louriero made it a 35- 0 contest at the half on a 3-yard TD run.

The Morse offense moved the ball a bit in the second quarter. Raz Baltazar ran 10 times for 58 yards, and a hook-and-ladder pass play from quarterback Connor Upham (2-of-11, 57 yards) to Tyler York to Baltazar resulted in a 58- yard gain, with only Nicholas Batchelder keeping Baltazar from scoring on the half’s final play, hauling the Morse running back down at the Westbrook 6-yard line.

With the clock running in the third quarter, the Blue Blazes scored two more touchdowns — Phelps a 31-yard pass play from quarterback Bailey Sawyer (7-of-13, 103 yards) and a 61-yard TD run by Loureiro — for a 49-0 lead.

Westbrook picked up 313 yards on the ground, led by Loureiro’s 205. The Blue Blazes out-gained the Shipbuilders 407-182. Phelps chipped in 46 yards rushing, while receiver Hamza Hanifi hauled in four receptions for 54 yards.

Baltazar led Morse with 92 tough yards on 15 carries. Defensively, Tait Nygaard (eight tackles, sack), Baltazar (seven tackles, forced fumble) and Dan Mills (sack) paced the Shipbuilders.
