FARMINGTON — Junior Justin Pierce of Topsham and Mt. Ararat High School scored his first goal of the season in the 84th minute to snap a scoreless deadlock and deliver the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 1-0 win over the UMaine Farmington Beavers in a non-conference men’s soccer game Wednesday evening at Leib Field.
Facing the prospect of its fourth overtime game of the season and potential fourth draw, Pierce’s late-game heroics earned Southern Maine its first win of the season to stand at 1-5-3. UMaine Farmington suffered its fifth straight loss, and third straight shutout, to stand at 2- 6.
USM held the statistical advantage over the Beavers, outshooting UMF, 21-8 for the game, but failed to put one solidly on frame, compelling UMaine Farmington goalkeeper junior Ronie Morales to make just two saves on three shots on goal.
The Huskies host UMass- Boston on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
