BATH — Maine’s First Ship in Bath will hold a free introductory shipbuilding day specifically for women on Sunday, October 5th. Women 18 and up, of all experience levels or no experience at all, are invited to attend. Taught by shipwright Rob Stevens, students will learn nomenclature, power tool use, wood selection, and more, while working on Virginia, our reconstruction of the first ship ever built in Maine. Safety gear will be provided.

The world of boatbuilding can be intimidating, what with all the old men standing around muttering obscure nautical terms into their beards, but it is also fun and rewarding to create a beautiful sailing vessel with your own hands. Come see what it’s all about in a low key, no pressure day of learning.

The class will be held from 9-3 at our build site behind the Freight Shed, 27 Commercial Street. Scones and beverages will be provided, but students should bring a lunch. Students should wear clothes that they don’t mind getting dirty, and closed toe shoes.

FMI visit mfship.org, call (207) 443 4242 Monday and Wednesday mornings or visit the build site Saturday and Wenesdays from 9 to 3.
