The Bowdoin College women’s volleyball team split a pair of contests this past weekend.
Bowdoin cruised to a 3-0 non-conference win at Gordon College (6-7) on Friday evening.
Bowdoin pulled away from Gordon in each of the three games, posting set scores of 25-18, 25-15, 25-17 to take its second-consecutive win overall.
Caroline Flaharty, a first-year, led the Polar Bears on the attack as she has all season. The rookie finished with 13 kills to only three errors and contributed eight digs on defense. Sydney Salle had a flawless night with 10 kills and no mis-hits to put up 12.5 points on the evening. She also contributed 2.5 total blocks.
Katie Doherty had a game-high 30 digs for the Polar Bears, while Quincy Leech served up 35 assists to lead the Polar Bear attack.
Bowdoin dropped a 3-1 decision to Tufts on Saturday by set scores of 19-25, 25- 20, 25-23, 25-23.
The Polar Bears is 6-4 overall, 0-3 in New England Small College Athletic Conference play.
Bowdoin visits Trinity on Friday at 8 p.m.
Women’s golf
The Polar Bears finished 10th of 14 squads at the Mount Holyoke Invitational this weekend at The Orchards Golf Club.
Bowdoin carded a two-day total of 703.
Williams finished first at the tournament with a team total of 601.
Bowdoin improved dramatically from day one to day two, shaving 25 strokes off its Saturday total on Sunday. Bowdoin’s 339 on Sunday was the eighth-best team score in round two.
Caroline Farber shot a 78 on Sunday and finished at 164, good enough for a tie for 29th place. Diya Chopra scored a 177 to finish in 51st, while Emme McCabe (179) was right behind in 53rd. Meredith Sullivan (183) and Haley Friesch (188) rounded out the Bowdoin competitors.
Bowdoin will compete at Taconic Golf Club next weekend for the Williams Invitational beginning on Saturday.
Women’s tennis
Bowdoin continued its fall tournament schedule over the weekend at the ITA New England Regional Championship, hosted by MIT.
Senior Joulia Likhanskaia led the way for Bowdoin in the singles bracket, winning a pair of matches and advancing to the third round with a win over a Tufts player (6-0, 6- 3) and a Babson player (6-2, 6- 2) before falling to a player from Williams, 6-1, 6-0.
Likhanskaia also teamed with Samantha Stalder to win a first-round doubles match. Pilar Giffenig/Maddie Rolph and Sarah Shadowens/Tess Trinka also claimed firstround wins before falling in the second round.
Shadowens also claimed a first-round singles match against a Wesleyan player (7-6, 6-2) before dropping in the second round.
Men’s golf
Bowdoin placed 13th of 15 teams at the Williams Fall Invitational at Taconic Golf Club.
The Polar Bears posted a team score of 651 over the two days.
Williams came away with the title with a 599 total over action on Saturday and Sunday.
Tom Dunleavy led the Polar Bears with a pair of rounds in the 70s, scoring 76 on Saturday and 79 on Sunday to end in 18th place overall at 13-over par.
Thomas Spagnola (161, +19) ended in a tie for 33rd, while Martin Bernard scored a 165 (+23) to take 49th. Jackson Harrower (174) and Eric Giesler (174) rounded out the Bowdoin competitors.
Bowdoin will compete at the NESCAC Fall Qualifier this upcoming weekend at Ralph Myhre Golf Club in Middlebury. The top four teams from next weekend advance to the NESCAC Championship in the spring.
Cross country
The Bowdoin men’s squad took first, while the women took second at a home invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bear men ran away from the field with a team score of 21, easily outpacing second-place Wentworth (60). The women’s squad totaled 28 points and was just edged out for the win by Wellesley (27).
Bowdoin recorded five of the top seven finishers to run away with the first-place finish in the men’s 8K race. Bridger Tomlin was the top Polar Bear finisher, covering the track in 26:08.5, while Nicholas Walker was right behind Tomlin in 26:08.7
Andrew McGowan (26:23.5) and Matt Jacobson (26:26.4) were in fourth and fifth place, respectively, while Calvin Park took seventh overall (26:37.4).
In the women’s run, Sarah Kelley won her second race in as many weeks, taking first for Bowdoin in 22:30.7 over the 6K course.
Anne McKee was third overall in 22:46.2 for Bowdoin, but Wellesley recorded the next three finishers to help seal their team victory.
Bowdoin runners went 7-to- 9 as Julia O’Rourke (23:17.6), Demi Feder (23:24.8) and Sarah Kinney (23:24.9) rounded out the top-five Polar Bear finishers.
Bowdoin is off this weekend and will return to action on Oct. 10 at the Open New England Championship at Franklin Park in Boston.
