BRUNSWICK — Margaret Berté aka Marge, just celebrated her 94th birthday last Saturday and died on Thursday September 22, 2016. She had been living at Horizons Living and Rehab in Brunswick since they opened and before that Amenity Manor in Topsham. Her husband of 73 years, Santo Maria Francesco Berté, died on May 20, 2016.

She was born in Brooklyn, New York on 9/17/22. She was the 13th child of 14 children. She married Santo on Valentine’s Day, 1942. She worked in a candy factory for many years, supervised 3 departments and loved it. Lucille Ball’s Candy Factory Video was among one of her favorites.

Her favorite pastime was playing Bingo. At one time she could play 16 cards without chips and managed to keep track of them all. I guess you could say she was a Bingo Savant. When they moved to Pejepscot Terrace, she jumped at the opportunity to organize and run the Bingo there. They were happy to have her take over.

She was a long time communicant of St. John’s Church on Pleasant Street in Brunswick. Generous to a fault, she loved to give small gifts to grownups and children. She had a very compassionate heart.

Survived by her daughter Lorraine Berté and her spouse Tina Phillips; son Joseph Berté and grandchildren Christopher Berté and Salvatore Berté.

No service will be held. Memorial donation contribution may be made to Horizons Living and Rehab recreation fund or the birdseed fund: 29 Maurice Drive, Brunswick, ME. Many, many thanks to the staff, residents and family members of Horizons Living and Rehab. This wonderful village of compassionate caregivers enriched her life as I believe she enriched theirs.
