September is prostate cancer awareness month. Be aware that one of every six American men is diagnosed with prostate cancer. Among cancers, it is the second biggest killer of men. I encourage men over the age of 40 to talk with their doctor about screening. Testing is a personal decision which could save or prolong your life.

The Maine Coalition to Fight Prostate Cancer www.mcfpc.org maintains an informative website; provides a support group at Mid-Coast Hospital (6:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month, adjacent to cafeteria); and offers a confidential, one-on-one hotline (504- 5373 ext. 800).
