Matt Dias Costa scored a pair of first-half goals as the Bowdoin College men’s soccer team cruised to a 5-0 win over the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday afternoon.

Bowdoin jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Ward buried a shot of his own. Levi Morant played a ball forward to Jake Stenquist, who lofted a cross to Ward for a one-time strike. Ellsworth scored in the 65th minute, off an assist by Morant, while Matty McColl capped the day with a goal in the 73rd minute off a feed by Wilson MacMillan.

The Polar Bears (2-1, 1-1 NESCAC) rebounded from Saturday’s overtime loss to Amherst and handed the Bobcats (2-2, 0-2 NESCAC) their second conference setback.
Sophia Lemmer gave Bowdoin the early lead, notching her first collegiate goal 10:34 into the first half. Lemmer forced Bates keeper Sarah McCarthy out of the net to challenge a long feed into the box from Morgen Gallagher. With McCarthy committed to the play, Lemmer settled the ball on the right post and netted a shot to the opposite side.
Holding onto the one-goal lead through the remainder of the opening half, Bowdoin looked to double its tally in the opening 10 minutes of the second. Following a corner kick, the Polar Bears forced a defensive scramble on the left post that ended with the ball in McCarthy’s hands.
The Bobcat defense came up with two more big saves 20 minutes into the half as Julia Bottone took a shot from close range that McCarthy denied with a left hand save, only to see Eliza Nitzan collect the rebound. Nitzan’s one-timer was blocked on the goal line by Sarah Gutch.
The Polar Bears put up one final tally in the 85th minute as Anna Mellman one-timed a bouncing rebound to the far left post.
Bowdoin held an 18-8 edge in shots, with the Bobcats earning a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. McCarthy ended the day with nine saves, while Rachel Stout made three for the Polar Bears.
