BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin College graduate Katie Mathews of Cumberland has been named an All-American by USA Rugby.
Mathews, the daughter of Bowdoin coaches MaryBeth and Bob, is the lone player from the newly-formed New England Small College Rugby Conference to net the national honor.
A flyhalf for the Polar Bears, Mathews also garnered an All-NESCRC honor last spring and was named Bowdoin’s MVP last fall as the team posted an undefeated regular season and advanced to the NRU Finals.
Mathews, who graduated from Bowdoin last spring with a degree in Chemistry, was one of just 22 players nationally to be awarded All- American laurels in Division II.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
