PORTLAND (AP) — Independent Maine governor candidate Eliot Cutler is proposing election reforms on the heels of a court decision designed to level the campaign finance playing field.

The Maine ethics commission on Wednesday voted unanimously to comply with a U.S. District Court decision to allow all candidates to accept up to $3,000 per donor over the course of this year’s election cycle. Independents had been limited to $1,500.

Cutler says if elected, he would also propose new rules so independent candidates would no longer have to collect twice as many signatures to get on a ballot. He says he would also support ranked choice voting or a single open primary for governor.

Cutler is running against incumbent Republican Gov. Paul LePage and Democratic Rep. Mike Michaud.
