To the editor:
In the wake of the Colorado movie theater horror story, I have only one thing to say: Sell them all the guns they want, just don’t let them have the ammunition.
Make bullets and shells as difficult as possible for anyone to get, and sell maybe a dozen at a time. Yes, I know, automatics and semi-automatics use whole ropes of ammo. Well, sell six inches at a time.
We are never going to cure our fellow Americans of their fanatic insistence on their God-given right to firearms. Short of going out and shooting them all ourselves, which is against my personal principles. Tempting though it be.
I suggest that police and hospitals take NRA types by the elbows and guide them through the emergency wards, the terminal wards, the morgues, let them see what bullets can do to poor mortals. Most of those people have no idea, they just see bang bangs on television or video games, and the characters pop right up again, as good as ever.
Either that or invite al- Qaida in, and let’s have a real war. That might cure us of our babyish behavior.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
