“I just reported wrong when I put (CJ) Hardin in for (Nick) Karkos,” admitted Neron. “I said ‘I screwed this up, so there is no sense prolonging this,’ so now I will have six months to think about what happened.”
The honest mistake, and a three-run Pastime Club sixth, ended Smith-Tobey’s season in a 6-3 American Legion Zone III loss on Tuesday at Lewiston High School.
Because of the error, Smith-Tobey’s two-on, two-out threat ended, and the Lewiston squad broke a 3-3 deadlock with its rally in the sixth to improve to 18-2.
“It’s a big spot, and we have a guy on the scorebook, and just knew when it was reported something wasn’t right, and we reported it when their guy walked,” said Cifelli, who argued early in the contest when Smith-Tobey’s Torrey Charnock ran over catcher Mekae Hyde at the plate while trying to score a run. “There was a lot of intensity in this game, and that happens in playoff baseball. It was a good game.”
Smith-Tobey, which finished 10-10, trailed 3-0 after two innings, but battled back, using sacrifice bunts and good base running to tie the game.
“We were getting guys on and sacrificing them over, just like they like to do, and these guys just never quit and they believe they can come back,” said Neron, whose squad matched Pastime in sacrifice bunts with three. “This Lewiston team will be tough to beat. They do a lot of things right.”
“Smith-Tobey doesn’t quit, so I wasn’t surprised they fought their way back, but the difference is our team is battle tested and came up with the three runs in the sixth,” said Cifelli.
Slow start
Pastime Club starting pitch Luke Cote threw two quick frames on just 19 pitches. Hyde gunned down Smith- Tobey’s Joey Van Note on a first-inning steal attempt, and Cote made a nice play on a bunt in the second.
Lewiston jumped on top early. Cote doubled to open the Pastime first, and Joe Sullivan reached on a bunt single to put runners at the corners. Hyde’s sacrifice fly followed for a 1-0 lead.
In the Pastime Club second, Ben Wigant and Chris Madden opened with back-to-back singles. David Cusson moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt, and Nate Berube’s grounder scored Wigant. Cote’s two-out single made it 3-0, but Barrett escaped further damage when first baseman Trent Charnock made a nice grab on Hyde liner to end the frame.
Cote ran into trouble in the third. A walk to Nick Karkos, a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Lathrop, a single by Torrey Charnock and a sacrifice fly by Van Note made it 3-1, and Smith-Tobey tied things in the fifth, with Van Note picking up a second RBI, and Zach Groat’s single, misplayed by center fielder Corbin Hyde for an error, allowed Van Note to score the tying run.
Barrett pitched out of trouble in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
“The fact that he shut them down last time made me stick with him all the way today,” said Neron. “He is always good for 120 pitches. We had Reid Drouin loosening up if we needed him, but Aaron pitched well.”
In the Smith-Tobey sixth, Barrett singled, but was picked off first on a good throw by Mekae Hyde. Trent Charnock walked, and with two outs, Cote walked Hardin. But, Cifelli’s challenge ended the inning.
With one out in the home half of the sixth, Cusson walked. Berube’s bunt moved pinch runner Alex Small to second, and Barrett intentionally walked Cote. Sullivan delivered the big, two-out hit, ripping a single past the dive of Groat into left field to give Pastime Club the lead. Mekae Hyde followed with a two-run single to right field.
Cote picked up the mound win, throwing 106 pitches over six frames with four strikeouts and four walks. He allowed seven hits. Sullivan pitched the seventh, getting a double-play grounder and a strikeout for the save.
At the plate, Cote, Sullivan and Corbin Hyde were 2-for-3 as Lewiston pounded out nine hits.
Barrett struck out four and walked four, while at the plate Torrey Charnock was 2-for-4 and Groat 2-for-3 to pace the Smith-Tobey offense.
