BATH — William Hanson Voorhees of Sun City Center, FL and Bath, ME died at Hillhouse in Bath on June 29 after a brief illness.

He was born at the family home at 42 Bedford Street in Bath on September 27, 1927 the youngest child of Wilmer (“Ike”) Voorhees and Eleanor Tallman Foote Voorhees. Bill was educated in Bath schools and was a graduate of Morse High School. His high school years were interrupted due to service in the US Navy during World War II. Following his graduation from high school he re-enlisted in the United States Navy serving until his retirement from active duty in 1968 as a Chief Boatswain’s Mate, his last posting being on board the hospital ship USS Repose in the Viet Nam conflict.

Following his retirement he worked in the buildings and grounds departments of the Bath Memorial Hospital and the Hyde School.

In 1991 Bill and his wife Mary relocated to Sun City Center, FL and thereafter split their time between Sun City Center and their cottage at Quaker Point in West Bath. Bill was an active gardener and wood worker during his time in Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers James W. and John T. Sr. and his sister Eleanor Voorhees Bliss.

He is survived by his wife Mary E. (Connors) Voorhees of Sun City Center and Bath and his son John W. Voorhees of Bath and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 6, at 11 a.m. at the Grace Episcopal Church, 1100 Washington Street, Bath, ME.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made in Bill’s memory to the charity of the donor’s choice.
