To the editor:
As chairwoman of this year’s American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Brunswick, I would like to thank area residents for their generosity and support.
Eighty teams participated in this year’s event and raised more than $136,000 to help the society’s fight for every birthday, threatened by every cancer, here and throughout the world.
This outstanding show of support proves that the people of the Brunswick area stand shoulder to shoulder with the American Cancer Society to achieve its mission of saving lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and fighting back.
We were honored to be joined by 150 survivors who walked the opening Survivors Lap on May 18, officially kicking off this year’s overnight event. These survivors are the reason we continue the fight. Their participation inspires hope in those currently battling cancer.
We extend special thanks to the many Relay For Life volunteers who worked to make this event a success — celebrating the lives of those who have battled cancer, remembering loved ones lost and pledging to fight back against the disease.
The Relay For Life committee did an outstanding job of putting the event together. Those committee members are Theresa Barry, James Eberhart, Hillary Kidwell, Julia Levesque-LeRoy, Olivia LeRoy, Wendy McKenney, Kate Menendez, Traci Moeller, Darcie Moore, Bruce Stockford, Melinda Theriault, Dan Wells, and Eric Wiese.
We also appreciate the generosity of this year’s top sponsors: Hannaford, Dunkin’ Donuts, Maine Center for Cancer Medicine, Mid Coast Hospital, Five County Credit Union, Downeast Energy, Bath Savings Institution, Norton Insurance & Financial Services, The Times Record, Knights of Columbus, FOX 23 and Big Hits Y100.9. Relay For Life would not be possible without their support.
Next year’s Relay For Life of Brunswick is scheduled for May 17 and 18 at the Brunswick High School track.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
