BRUNSWICK — Alumni of the old Brunswick High School, sometimes called the “Grand Duchess,” will help to unveil a bronze plaque recognizing the school razed in August 2009 to accommodate construction of the Harriet Beecher Stowe (HBS) Elementary School.

The event will take place at 11 a.m. Friday in the HBS entryway with members of the Brunswick Rotary Club, the Brunswick High School Alumni Association and the Village Heritage Society unveiling the plaque, which reads:

“Brunswick High School was built on this site in 1937 at a cost of $270,000, opened its doors on Feb. 4, 1938, and over time three additional wings were added. The school served students from Brunswick, Topsham, Harpswell, Durham, Bowdoin and Bowdoinham, including dependents of military personnel stationed at U.S. Naval Air Station Brunswick and Topsham Air Force Base.

“On May 21, 1946, student Emerson Zeitler’s proposed unique (Chinese) Dragon became the official mascot. The last graduation was in 1995. Over 57 years, BHS shaped the lives of approximately 11,700 students. The building was razed on Aug. 6, 2009, to make way for the Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School.”

The old high school stood at the corner of McKeen and Spring streets.
