FORMER BOWDOIN COLLEGE Russian Professor Emerata Jane Knox chose to devote herself in retirement — among other things — to the Special Olympics local athletics and was selected assistant coach for the Maine Track Team that competed with thousand of athletes in the National Special Olympics week-long competition held at Princeton, N.J., on June 15-19. In the top photo, Knox is seen here with 15-year-old David Ellington after he won a bronze medal. Joel Burkhardt of Brunswick, who works behind the scenes in the Thorne Dining Hall kitchen during the academic year, is here competing in the 800-meter race.
