A VIEW OF THE WEST ROAD BRIDGE in Bowdoin that will be closed to traffic, starting today, June 23, and going through November. A sign denoting it is West Road will go up in place of the Ferrin Road sign when the bridge work is completed. The $1.1 million project on the bridge, which was built in 1956, includes removing and rebuilding the entire bridge deck and structural steel, according to the Maine Turnpike Authority’s project information page on its website. The deck is the portion of the bridge that sits on top of the structural steel, including the curbing and railing. The bridge clearance will be raised to a height of 15 feet, 6 inches, and the substructure will have minor concrete repair. The contract was awarded to Wyman & Simpson of Richmond. The bridge carries approximately 338 vehicles a day, so the Maine Turnpike will post signs for a 4-mile detour route during bridge rehabilitation. The signs will redirect traffic to Whitten Hill Road, to Litchfield Road and to Richmond Road.
