KENTS HILL — Jen Machin scored with seven seconds left to lift Brunswick High School to a thrilling 11-10 Eastern Maine girls lacrosse win over Cony on Friday.
The game was played at Kents Hill due to unplayable conditions at Cony.
The Dragons improved to 6- 0 and sit atop the Eastern A standings, while the Rams fell to 5-1. The two teams are scheduled to meet again on May 29 in Brunswick.
“The Cony goalie, Katrina Duncan, tangled up our offense with 15 saves, several of them at point-blank range,” said Brunswick coach Beth Caputi. “The game was tied five times and we only led (5-4) for 1:06 in the first half — and then for the last seven seconds!”
Cony was up 7-6 at the half.
The second half was scoreless for the first 10 minutes when Cony scored to go up 8- 6. With 6:38 remaining, Brunswick evened the score at 8-8 on goals from Machin and Suzannah Smith.
The Dragons trailed 10-9 with 1:12 remaining. Dakota Foster won the draw (she won nine in the game!) and a subsequent foul resulted in a free-position goal by Foster with 22 seconds left.
Another draw control and a pass from Foster to Machin, “for the final goal and a gutsy win!” added Caputi, finished the Brunswick comeback. The Dragons picked up nine assists on their 11 goals.
Foster wound up with five goals and two assists, Corinne O’Connor four assists, Caroline Wild a goal and two assists, Machin two goals, and Annie Kelly, Smith and Lillian Kjellman a goal each. Courtney Roderick added an assist.
