To the editor:
It’s strange how we wait for the Friday edition of The Times Record.
We open it quickly, passing the front few pages to find the “We Remember” page, which lists our fallen soldiers’ names, place of their death and how they died.
Mostly in Afghanistan.
Oh no, many names this week.
Nicky, Donnie, Dean, Manual, Bennie, Jason, Moises, Chris, Branden, Dickey, Scott, Christian and Nicholas … Mostly U.S. Army, one U.S. Navy.
When I see the name Branden, my heart quickens. I have two grandsons and one son-inlaw at present, serving this country. One is named Branden.
I hurt for the families grieving today and perhaps wondering if the sacrifice is worth it.
When is enough — enough?
I lay my hand over the names and pray for the families — 16 U.S. military men and women — died this week so that we can go about living the good life.
Sixteen!
My husband gathers more flags and sadly adds this week’s total to his front yard memorial.
Why does he bother each week?
It’s such a small thing to do to honor these heroes. I wish each family knew how much we care and that we remember your sons and daughters.

Topsham

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
