PORTLAND — The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, in cooperation with Amtrak and its operating partners, announced that the summer schedule for the Amtrak Downeaster went into effect Monday. The changes include the start of seasonal service to Old Orchard Beach, and the later departure of Train 689/699 from Boston to better serve Red Sox fans. The Downeaster will also be featuring tailgate themed trains on some Red Sox Game days throughout the summer.
Additional minor schedule changes have also been made to accommodate changes in the MBTA commuter rail schedule.
NNEPRA says the reliability of Downeaster trains has rebounded in the past several months, with 90 percent of trains arriving on time. Customer Satisfaction Index of 92 percent remains consistently above Amtrak’s national average, and among the best of all Amtrak routes in the country.
