Jonathan Bond, 71, died unexpectedly on May 21, 2016 at home on Orr’s Island. His life was filled with teaching, sailing, building, restoring old houses, working the land, community service, and family and friends. He died doing what he loved, working the land, at the location he loved the most — Orr’s Island.

Known by family and friends as Jot or JB, he was born Jan. 24, 1945 in Topsfield MA, as the youngest child of the late C. Lawrence and Barbara Bond. His lifelong love of Orr’s Island began at age 7 when his family purchased the former Joseph Orr farm. Jot enjoyed the island every possible minute, working the land and sailing its waters, from then until his untimely death.

Jot is survived by his wife of 39 years, Elizabeth Bond; their three sons: Andrew Bond of Stamford CT; William Bond and his wife Jessica of Newbury MA; and Thaddeus Bond of Peabody MA; four grandchildren: Audrey, Oliver, Ellis and Evelyn, also of Newbury MA; and two brothers: Charles Bond and his wife Marie of Jefferson NH, and Nathaniel Bond and his wife Beth of Glenburn ME.

Before moving full-time to Orr’s Island, Jot was an industrial arts teacher in Peabody, MA, for 34 years, beginning in 1968 when he graduated from Fitchburg State College. He attended Cambridge School of Weston, and graduated from Masconomet Regional High School in 1963, and Wentworth Institute of Technology in 1965.

Jot was a successful businessman, who helped create, build, and manage Orr’s Island Campground for 39 years until it closed upon his retirement in late 2015. Over the years, he shared the beautiful location with thousands of campers who came from all 50 states and 23 countries worldwide to enjoy its scenery and serenity.

Jot served his community as a volunteer for almost 11 years as a rescue driver for the Orr’s-Bailey Islands Fire Department.

Burial services will be private. A memorial service to celebrate Jot’s life will be held on Saturday, July 9, at 2 PM at 44 Bond Point Road, Orr’s Island, ME. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick.
