AUGUSTA (AP) — Gubernatorial candidate Mike Michaud is laying out his ideas to fight fraud and abuse and improve Maine’s welfare programs.
The Democrat hoping to unseat Gov. Paul LePage in November will release details of his plans at the Statehouse today.
Michaud is in a three-person race with the Republican governor and independent candidate Eliot Cutler.
Overhauling Maine’s welfare programs has been a priority for LePage’s administration and will likely play a key role in his upcoming re-election campaign.
Several of the governor’s welfare efforts were blocked by the Democratic-controlled Legislature last session, including measures to require applicants to show they’ve applied for at least three jobs before receiving benefits.
He also sought to limit the use of electronic benefit transfer cards for certain purchases and out of state.
