WISCASSET

A fire this morning at Two Bridges Regional Jail heavily damaged the workshop used by inmates in the jail’s industries program.

Wiscasset Fire Chief T.J. Merry said the call came in at 5:55 a.m. today and he was the first on the scene. When he arrived, Merry said heavy fire was coming from the detached three-bay garage where the inmates do woodworking.

There were no injuries, and no one was in the building at the time of the fire. The fire was knocked down in 15 minutes, and there was mutual aid responses from Bath, Woolwich, Alna and Westport Island, as well as Edgecomb and Dresden who responded to the station.

“The fire was contained to the paint room section of the workshop,” said Merry, adding that it was hard to pinpoint the time the fire started because the room was closed off.

The paint room sustained heavy damages, Merry said, and there is significant smoke damage throughout.

“They had some nice woodworking equipment in there that was fairly damaged,” said Merry, noting that the firefighters on the scene did well navigating the tools on the workshop to extinguish the fire.

The cause of the fire is unknown, though Merry said an investigator from the Fire Marshal’s Office is expected on the scene this afternoon.
