PORTLAND — The Portland Sea Dogs (38-20) opened up a six-game homestand with a barnburner against the Erie SeaWolves (27-29), which ended 11-9 in favor of the visitors Tuesday night at Hadlock Field in Eastern League baseball action.
The game was tied 9-9 entering the eighth inning. Corey Jones singled for Erie and Aaron Westlake doubled before Michael Olmsted took over on the mound for Portland. The big righty was greeted by a suicide squeeze bunt off the bat of Craig Albernaz, which scored Jones from third and gave Erie the 10-9 lead. Dixon Machado followed with an RBI double.
The Sea Dogs were silenced over the final five innings by Erie relievers Bryan Augenstein and Ryan Robowski.
Down 1-0 in the first, the Sea Dogs scored three times in the home half of the frame. Sean Coyle and Keury De La Cruz each picked up an RBI.
The Sea Dogs upped their lead to 5-1 in the second on run-scoring doubles by Deven Marrero and Blake Swihart, who later homered.
The second game of the three-game series is slated for tonight at 7 p.m.
