To the editor:

I enjoyed the April 20 story on the restoration efforts of the fish ladder at Nequasset (“one fish, two fish …”).

I encourage anyone who wants to assist one of the world’s great migrations to sign up for a shift to count alewives as they navigate the ladder and make their way over the dam and into Nequasset Lake to spawn.

Volunteers are needed daily through June, and it can take less than 30 minutes — although you will probably want to stay longer.

My children and I counted two times last week and were amazed at the effort these little fish put out.

Alewives are important bait for our fishermen, as well as food for species like eagles, osprey, seals, tuna and cod. Anything we can do to help the alewife will help the restoration of the entire natural system.
