The Bowdoin College men’s lacrosse team overwhelmed Emmanuel on Senior Day, 14- 5, Saturday at Pickard Field.
The 12th-ranked Polar Bears improved to 11-3 on the season, while the Saints fell to 7-8.
Despite playing in non-conference action on Saturday, due to results from around the league, Bowdoin clinched a home NESCAC quarterfinal for this upcoming Saturday.
The Polar Bears quickly opened a four-goal, first-quarter lead thanks to a dominant opening period. Senior defenseman Billy Valle sparked the game-opening run as the hosts held a 4-0 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Brett Kujala and Matthew Crowell each scored twice in the run as Bowdoin scored four more times in the fourth quarter to put the contest on ice. Kujala led all players with four goals and one assist, while Crowell added two goals and an assist.
The Polar Bears will close out their regular season with a road contest at Tufts on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Women’s Lacrosse
Bowdoin celebrated Senior Day in a big way with a 16-3 win over Wheaton on Ryan Field on Saturday afternoon.
The win improved the Polar Bears to 7-7, while the Lyons fell to 8-8.
Bowdoin wasted little time putting the game out of reach, scoring the first five goals and holding a 12-1 lead at halftime. The Polar Bears got goals from five different players in the game-opening run and Lindsay Picard scored three times in a 7-0 run to end the period. The hosts coasted to victory in the second half, with Annie Glenn scoring two of the team’s four goals in the frame.
Seniors Lindsay Picard (four goals, two assists), Megan O’Connor (four goals) and Emma Beecher (two goals, one assist) led the scoring for the Polar Bears, while classmate Sophie Janes had three caused turnovers and three groundballs.
Bowdoin concludes its regular season with a home game against Tufts on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The Polar Bears have to beat Tufts and hope for a Williams loss to Middlebury to clinch a spot in the NESCAC Tournament.
Baseball
Bowdoin completed a series sweep of Williams on Sunday, capping the teams’ three-game set with a 4-3 victory at Pickard Field.
The Polar Bears have won six straight games overall and improved to 18-10, while the Ephs fell to 9-17 on the season.
After a quick first two innings, Williams plated the game’s first run in the third when Alex Panstares walked, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and came home on a David Rosas single to left
Bowdoin replied with a four-run outburst in the bottom of the fourth inning when Chad Martin led off with a triple and came home on a groundout by Peter Cimini. After a Ben Osterholtz double, and Joe Gentile single and stolen base, Colby Joncas doubled to left, scoring both runners. Joncas came around to score on an error on the next play to give Bowdoin a 4-1 lead.
Richard Arms got the win by going five innings for Bowdoin, allowing just one earned run with five strikeouts
Bowdoin will return to action on Tuesday afternoon at home against St. Joseph’s at 4 p.m.
The Polar Bears swept Williams on Saturday at Pickard Field, taking a 2-0 win in the opener and a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.
In the first game, Harry Ridge went seven shut-out innings, scattering seven hits and striking out six for the win.
Cody Todesco scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch.
In the second contest, Williams tied the game with two runs in the ninth, but Bowdoin walked off with the win in the 10th.
Todesco doubled to begin the 10th, was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Luke Cappellano and scored on a Gentile single.
Track
The Polar Bear women hosted the Aloha Relays on Saturday, coming out on top with 171 points to edge the University of Southern Maine (165) for the title.
Bates (125), Colby (90), Wellesley (57.50), Husson (31.50), Mount Holyoke (23) and UMaine-Farmington (4) rounded out the field.
Addison Carvajal won five of the seven events en route to a victory in the Heptathlon with a score of 3,982 points.
The Polar Bears went 1-2 in the 800 meters as Meghan Bellerose (2:18.33) and Sarah Kelley (2:19.05) finished within a second of each other. Bowdoin also won the 4×800 relay (9:35.96) by a dominating 40-second margin behind the efforts of Julia O’Rourke, Bellerose, Allyson Fulton and Demi Feder.
Katie Krupp won the triple jump (38-08.25) for Bowdoin. Pamela Zabala claimed the discus throw (131-00.25), while Lucy Knott took the hammer throw (150-04). Ellen Masalsky rounded out the Bowdoin winners with a first-place finish in the javelin (124-01).
The Polar Bear men competed in the Maine State Outdoor Championship at Colby College in Waterville. Bowdoin was second to Bates (222- 200), with USM (97), Colby (77), Farmington (13) and Husson (5) also scoring.
Brian Greenberg continued his hot spring, winning the long jump (21-04.75) and finishing second in the triple jump (47-02.25).
Bowdoin also got wins from Nicholas Walker in the 10,000 (32:25.41) and Calvin Henry in the 1,500 (4:03.43). Bowdoin finished 1-2-3 in the 800, with Jacob Ellis (1:56.06), Conor Donahue (1:56.25) and John Kennealy (1:56.59) finishing less than a second apart. Joseph Staudt won the 110 hurdles in 15.19 seconds.
Both Bowdoin team head to Amherst this upcoming weekend for the NESCAC Championships.
Men’s tennis
The second-ranked Polar Bears slammed ninth-ranked Williams, 8-1 in a top-10 battle at Pickard Courts on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears stand at 12- 1 this spring.
Bowdoin put the Ephs in an early hole, grabbing a 3-0 lead in doubles play, and never looked back. Jerry Jiang and Kyle Wolfe made quick work at No. 2 doubles with an 8-4 win, while Luke Tercek/Luke Trinka and Chase Savage/Gil Roddy netted 8-5 wins at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively.
In singles play, Bowdoin won the first two completed matches to seal the win. Jiang earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 4. Tercek clinched the win with an authoritative 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 to put the Polar Bears over the top
Bowdoin also got wins from Wolfe (4-6, 6-4, 10-7), Roddy (7-5, 6-4) and Grant Urken (6-2, 6-7, 11-9).
The Polar Bears will continue their homestand on Wednesday as they host Bates in a match beginning at 4 p.m.
Women’s tennis
Bowdoin defeated second-ranked Williams, 6-3 on Saturday afternoon for the first time in program history.
The Polar Bears (12-4) were 0-28 against the reigning national champion Ephs (13-3) all-time.
Bowdoin opened the day with a doubles sweep. Joulia Likhanskaia and Tiffany Cheng came back to win 8-6 at No. 1 after trailing 4-1 to begin the match. Tess Trinka and Kyra Silitch secured the win at two with an 8-5 finish. Pilar Giffenig and Maddie Rolph secured the doubles sweep with the 9-7 win at three.
Cheng played the only straight set match of the day, going 7-5, 7-6 for the win at No. 2 singles. Samantha Stalder earned a win at six singles (6-4, 1-6, 7-6) after battling back in the third set tiebreaker. Likhanskaia secured a three-set victory at No. 1 (7-6, 6-7, 6-3) to tally the final match point for Bowdoin.
Bowdoin concludes the regular season with a 10 a.m. match at Tufts on Saturday.
Softball
Bowdoin exploded for 19 runs in a pair of shut-out victories over host Husson University of Sunday afternoon at Bangor.
The Polar Bears (18-13-2) captured an 8-0 five-inning win in game one and followed up with an 11-0 victory over Husson (11- 23) in game two.
Bowdoin scored a pair of runs in the first inning off two Husson errors. Julia Geaumont put the ball in play, resulting in a Claire McCarthy run, and Katie Gately’s chop to third allowed Caroline Rice to score.
McCarthy tagged an RBI doubled in the second to drive in Emma Stevens. Caroline Rice followed up with a single through the left side that scored McCarthy.
Geaumont pitched all five innings and allowed four hits and no runs. The senior struck out five batters and walked one.
Jordan Gowdy led off for Bowdoin with a single and quickly scored on a triple to left by McCarthy in game two. Rice drove in McCarthy with a single up the middle.
Bowdoin scored three more runs in the second, beginning with an RBI double from Lauren O’Shea. Gowdy followed with an RBI groundout, driving in Katie Kaufman. Rice concluded the inning’s scoring with a double to left center.
Bowdoin plays at the University of New England on Wednesday in a doubleheader, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
