WOOLWICH — A Woolwich man who crashed his pickup truck into a tree on Murphy’s Corner Road near his home Thursday allegedly left the roadway after falling asleep, according to the Sagadahoc County Sheriff ’s Department.
The crash was reported at 3:20 p.m. Chief Deputy Brett Strout said Stephen Hammond, 70, of 321 Murphy’s Corner Road, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck north in the area of 305 Murphy’s Corner Road when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel, crossed the oncoming lane of traffic, went into a ditch and then struck a tree.
The impact totaled the truck.
North East Mobile Health Services took Hammond to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, where he was treated and released, according to a hospital spokesman.
Woolwich Fire and EMS also responded to the crash. Deputy Steve Thibeault is investigating the incident, Strout said.
