BRUNSWICK

Abby Lord and Julia Sicard combined for six hits and seven runs scored from their first two spots in the Hampden Academy batting order as the Broncos defeated Brunswick, 11-1 in high school Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference softball action on Wednesday.

The game opened the season for both teams.

Lord singled and advanced on a two-base error before scoring on a wild pitch to open the scoring for Hampden.

The Dragons tied the score in the bottom of the second inning when Shea Sullivan walked and advanced to second on Alyssa Dunton’s single to left field. Hannah Escoe advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Allie Eck drove home Sullivan with an infield single.

Hampden (1-0) scored twice in the third when Sicard and Paige Yost reached on singles and scored on a two-base infield error.

Brunswick managed to battle with the Broncos until the visitors scored five runs over the final two innings.

Brunswick coach Hugh Dwyer offered, “We came out confident and played with a good team through five innings, but some misplayed balls opened up the game. Lord and Sicard really put a lot of pressure on our defense today. We’ll work to improve on this effort.”

Freshmen Sullivan went the distance on the mound for the Dragons, walking three batters while striking out five. Mikala Leland and Sydney Hatch pitched for the Broncos as the two combined to limit the Dragons to five hits and four walks.

Nicole Pelletier had two hits and three steals for the Dragons, who visit Skowhegan on Friday at 1 p.m.
