LEWISTON — The Bowdoin College men’s lacrosse team saw its five-game win streak come to an end at the hands of Bates on Wednesday evening, 11-5.
The Polar Bears, ranked 11th in the nation, lost for the first time since March 17 and dropped to 7-2 (4-2 NESCAC). Bates won its first game against Bowdoin since April of 2007 and improved to 4-5 (2-4 NESCAC).
Rob Highland dominated for the Bobcats, scoring five times with an assist and Kevin Helm had four caused turnovers and four groundballs. Patrick Lawlor led Bowdoin with a goal and an assist on the evening. Conor O’Toole had a goal and a team-best five groundballs for the Polar Bears.
Bowdoin rallied from an early two-goal deficit to tie the game at 2-2 with tallies from O’Toole and Griffin Cardew early in the second quarter. But, the Bobcats scored three times in the final 9:04 before halftime to take a 5-2 edge at the break.
Chris Williamson stopped 10 shots for Bowdoin, while Adam Scharff made nine stops for Bates. The Bobcats held a 40-34 edge in shots and won 11 of 20 faceoffs. Bowdoin could not take advantage of the extra man, going 0-for-5 with the advantage.
The Polar Bears are scheduled to return to action on Saturday when they host NESCAC-leading Trinity at 2 p.m.
