PORTLAND
The Hartford Yard Goats (8- 3) were carried by their starting pitcher for the third straight game and defeated the Portland Sea Dogs (4-7) on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field, 8-1.
Kyle Freeland went seven innings, allowing one run (unearned) with five strikeouts and one walk.
Portland struck for its lone run in the third inning thanks to an error from Pat Valaika that allowed Jose Vinicio to reach base. He later scored on a sacrifice fly from Rainel Rosario.
The Sea Dogs maintained a 1-0 lead until the seventh inning behind starting pitcher Aaron Wilkerson, who worked six innings on two hits, one walk and five strikeouts.
The Yard Goats took the lead in the seventh inning on a two-run home run by Ashley Graeter off of Simon Mercedes, his first of the season. They extended their lead in the eighth, scoring three more runs off Mercedes.
Portland hosts Trenton tonight at 6 p.m.
