PITTSFIELD — Jacelyn McNeill struck out eight as the Morse High School softball team picked up its first win with a 7-4 victory over Maine Central Institute in Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference play on Wednesday.

The Shipbuilders improved to 1-2 and hosts Erskine Academy on Friday at 4 p.m. MCI fell to 2-2.

Morse jumped on top 1-0 in the first and plated four runs in the fourth for a 5-0 edge. McNeill was stellar at the plate, singling three times and adding a double with two RBIs. Meghan Stover also doubled, while Hope Faulkingham chipped in an RBI single.

“Much better defensive support behind some real strong pitching” said Morse coach Will Laffely. “We still need more improvement in making less errors. This gives the other team more opportunities to keep innings going.”

MCI trailed 7-1 heading to the seventh, but tacked on three runs to make things interesting.

Katie George led MCI with three singles, while Ryleigh Lord added two singles.

BREWER 5
BRUNSWICK 0

The visiting Witches scored four runs in the first inning to take an early lead in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference win at Brunswick.

Brewer (2-1) pitcher Meg Davis limited the Dragons (0-3) to three singles, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Maddy Bailey had four hits to pace Brewer, with Alexis Getchell and Cassy Green adding two hits each. Davis ripped a triple.

For Brunswick, Ashley Howe, Shelby Plourde and Maddie Wilkes each singled, while Hannah Escoe went the distance on the mound, allowing 10 hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

“Plourde had an impressive game at shortstop, making several plays and throwing out Davis on a relay from center fielder Julia Carpenter to stop a potential Brewer rally in the second inning,” said Brunswick coach Hugh Dwyer, whose Dragons visit Bangor on Friday. “That played picked us up. The girls realized they could play with Brewer from that point on.”

Leading 10-0, Bangor closed it out with eight runs in the fifth inning to post a KVAC win over the host Eagles on Wednesday.

Cordelia Stewart went five innings and gave up a Devon Hutchins single with three strikeouts and a walk.

Rhiannon Hersey went three innings for the Eagles with three walks and Kim Leslie worked two innings with a strikeout and walk.

In the Bangor offense, Sydni Cosgrove had a single and double, Cordelia Stewart a single and home run, Emily Gilmore a double and home run, and Emily Reilly, Alexis Stanhope and Kylie Cunningham two singles each.

Mt. Ararat fell to 0-3 and is scheduled to visit Oxford Hills on Friday.

YARMOUTH 9

Kallie Hutchinson scampered home on an error in the sixth inning to break a 7- 7 tie and lift the host Clippers to a Western Maine Conference win over 0-2 Freeport.

Melissa Levinson was 2- for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Yarmouth (1-2), which used five hits and 12 walks to get the win.

Hannah Roy paced Freeport (0-2 and scheduled to visit Falmouth on Friday) with three hits, including a double. Ebe Wiest added a single and double, while Jess Perry picked up three singles.

MTN. VALLEY 20
WISCASSET 8

The visiting Falcons scored 12 runs in the sixth inning for an MVC win at Wiscasset.

Lindsay Martson earned the win and had three hits for Mountain Valley, while Wiscasset fell to 0-3 and visits Mt. Abram on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Sydney Petrie led Mountain Valley with four hits, while Sam Higley and Aly Carlton pounded three hits each. The Falcons had 23 hits.

Briana Goud paced the Wolverines with three hits, including two doubles. Tylan Onorato also doubled.

Lisbon pitcher Kailyn Hill and Telstar hurler Jessie Dirago combined to strike out 32 hitters in a Mountain Valley Conference contest on Wednesday.

The Rebels managed to push across a run in the third inning for the victory.

Dirago struck out 18, walked four and allowed just one hit, a single by Arianna Kahler.

Maisey Griffin drove in the lone run with an RBI double. Haley Peterson singled.

Hill permitted just two hits, struck out 14 and walked four.

The Greyhounds are 1-1 and visit Spruce Mountain on Friday, while Telstar improved to 2-0.
