Plans for a subdivision for families with limited income in Brunswick took a step toward becoming a reality on Tuesday, after the planning board reviewed a sketch plan from Habitat for Humanity/7 Rivers.
The four-lot development will be located at 89 Harpswell Road outside Bowdoin College.
Town Planner Jeremy Doxsee said the project has so far met the town’s basic requirements for a residential subdivision.
Habitat houses tend to be “fairly modest” buildings, according to Curtis Neufeld of Sitelines, P.A., representing Habitat for Humanity/7 Rivers. The homes will be about 1,100 square feet, without paved driveways or garages.
The first unit will be constructed this year, with the remaining lots to be constructed over the next three years.
Harpswell Road neighbor Zachary Stegeman said he supported the projected, but said he was “mildly concerned about increasing the transient sense of the neighborhood” with the addition of Habitat homes.
Habitat for Humanity has a “good record” of keeping people in their houses, said planning board member Bill Dana. “They like paying their mortgages off and staying in their houses,” he said.
According to Habitat for Humanity/7 Rivers, the first home built will be designated for a local veteran. Habitat is partnering with the Mid-Coast Veterans Council in reviewing applicants for that home.
