BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College baseball and softball teams were in action on Sunday.

Softball

Visiting Bowdoin completed its busy Sunday schedule by finishing off a series sweep of Bates and securing a trip to the 2014 NESCAC Tournament.

Bowdoin concluded its NESCAC play with an 8-4 mark in conference and 22-12 overall.

The Polar Bears took a 7-3 decision in the opening game of Sunday’s doubleheader followed by an 8-0 five inning win.

Bates, coached by former Brunswick High School standout McKell Barnes, fell to 8-20 on the season (2-10 NESCAC).

The Polar Bears will be making their third consecutive trip to the NESCAC Tournament and will open play at Williams on Friday at 2:30 p.m.

Trailing 1-0, the Polar Bears answered right back as Adriane Krul led off the fourth with a double. Emily Griffin followed up by singling, pushing Krul to third. Julia Geaumont put the ball in play and allowed Krul to score and even the game at 1-1. The Bowdoin offense took over after that, with a Krul double knocking in three runs.

With Hanna Wurgaft aboard with a leadoff double to begin the sixth, Casey Correa tagged a ball up the middle for an RBI single. Dimitira Spathakis followed up by knocking in another run.

Geaumont allowed six hits and three runs on the rubber for Bowdoin, while fanning five. Kelsey Freedman pitched all seven innings for Bates with six strikeouts and three walks while allowing 10 hits.

In the nightcap, Krul led off the first with a single and quickly advanced to third with consecutive stolen bases. The Bobcats were obligated to make the force out at first on the following play, allowing the runner to score from third. With Cielle Collins and Katie Gatley both on base, Wurgaft launched a homer for a 4-0 lead.

Melissa DellaTorre faced just 18 batters in five innings, striking out half. The senior pitcher allowed just three hits and no walks.

Bowdoin returns to Pickard Field for its final home series against Maine-Farmington today, 3:30 p.m.

Baseball

Visiting Tufts secured its bid to the NESCAC Tournament with a Sunday sweep of Bowdoin, 5-1 and 14-0, at Pickard Field.

The seventh-ranked Jumbos improved to 27-3 (8-2 NESCAC).

The Polar Bears have been eliminated from playoff contention and stand at 17-13-1 (5-7 NESCAC).

Bowdoin got to Superko in the fifth as Sean Mullaney singled home Duncan Taylor to make it 4-1.

Eric Jacobsen took the loss for Bowdoin, allowing four earned runs in two innings of work. James Howard led Tufts with three hits in the win.

The Tufts offense exploded for 14 runs and 12 hits in the second game and took advantage of six Bowdoin errors and nine walks by Polar Bear pitchers.

The big inning proved to be a five-run third for the Jumbos, as Cody McCallum laced a tworun single to spark the rally as part of a threehit, three-RBI day for the Tufts left fielder.

Tufts starter Christian Sbily didn’t need much help as he tossed a five-hit shutout, striking out five batters in the victory.

Jay Loughlin took the setback for Bowdoin by allowing four earned runs in 2.1 innings.

Bowdoin is scheduled to host Southern Maine in its next outing this afternoon, 4 p.m.
