Chapin are hoping to pass on their West Bath home to someone who will enjoy it as much as they did through an essay contest.

Much like the essay competition for a Lovell bed and breakfast that had received national attention last year, the Chapins are offering the same type of opportunity for those who may be looking to own a 6,000- square-foot home that sits on more than four acres of land.

In 300 words or less, applicants are encouraged to explain why winning the Chapins’ home would help them live out a “Maine Objective.”

While the couple had bought the home in 2007 with plans to stay for a while, “plans change,” Fred said on Wednesday.

Due to job and family obligations, as their daughter and granddaughter live in Pennsylvania, Janet said they have been out of state and away from the home for about two years, while currently renting the space to tenants.

The home includes features such as a greenhouse, sauna and game room, all of which are part of the addition the Chapins had built to the house in 2009, in addition to an outside building that houses garage space and an apartment above it.

The township has appraised the home at about $588,000, while it was listed at $650,000 when the home was appraised through a real estate agent in 2012, said Fred.

“We love it and we miss it,” Janet said. “We’re going to miss it even more, but being able to deed this house over to a new owner is going to be very special too. It’s a very exciting process.”

Essays are due by June 20, which includes an entry fee of $140. If the minimum number of 4,200 entries is unmet, all but $25 of each entry fee will be refunded.
