WINTRHOP (AP) — A Maine filmmaker has produced a documentary detailing the struggles of dogs traumatized by NFL quarterback Michael Vick’s former dogfighting operation.
The Kennebec Journal reports that Darcy Dennett decided to produce her film, “The Champions,” after meeting one of 22 dogs rescued in the wake of the Vick scandal that were considered the most difficult to rehabilitate.
Dennett says “Cherry” was too afraid to have contact with people when she met him in 2008. After seeing him again in 2011, the Winthrop native was so moved by his progress that she decided to make the film.
“The Champions” profiles Cherry and several other Vick dogs that are living happy lives with their new owners.
It will be shown at the Railroad Square Cinema in Waterville on Sunday at 7 p.m.
