BOWDOIN

A Bowdoin man with dementia who wandered off in the woods near his home was found safe and sound within a few hours after reported missing, according to the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Department.

Guy Kittle, 85, was reported missing in the woods at around 3 p.m. after walking away from his residence on John Tarr Road, according to Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry. Kittle also went missing and was found safe in two recent instances, on Christmas Eve and in early September 2014.

Merry said Kittle was located just after 5 p.m. Wednesday while it was still daylight, located by a Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife plane that was called to join the search. With daylight and no tree cover, visibility conditions were good for a search from the air. There were searchers nearby on the ground who were able to get to Kittle quickly.

Kittle had a jacket and hat but his feet were wet and he was taken to Mid Coast Hospital to be checked over.

Local firefighters were involved in the search as well as the Maine Warden Service and the Sagadahoc County Emergency Management Agency, Merry said.

“He’s safe and sound and we’re glad for all the support from those volunteers who came out and assisted,” Merry said. “It does take a team effort and require a fair amount of resources between local law enforcement, fire departments and state agencies such as the warden service so we’re very grateful that we have a good working relationships among these agencies.”
