PORTLAND — Rocco Grimaldi scored a pair of goals in the third period as the Portland Pirates (31-20-2- 1) sailed past the Springfield Falcons (21-27-3-4) by a score of 4-2 in front of a crowd of 3,955 Sunday afternoon at Cross Insurance Arena.
Wade Megan intercepted a Falcons rush and sped into the Falcons zone, punching home his fourth goal of the season for a 1-0 Pirates lead. Megan’s fourth shorthanded goal of the year tied him at the top of the league for short-handed tallies with Zach Hyman of the Toronto Marlies.
Tied 1-1, the Pirates jumped ahead in the third period as Brett Olson found Connor Brickley in stride. He skated in and buried a hard wrister in the top corner over the right shoulder of Falcons goaltender Josh Robinson, giving Portland the 2-1 lead. Grimaldi potted his first of two goals. The forward connected on a pass from Mackenzie Weegar, cut to the middle, and blasted the slap shot past Robinson for the 3-1 lead. Dylan Olsen picked up the second assist on the power play goal at 7:58 of the third.
With just over a minute to play, the Falcons pulled Robinson for the extra attacker. Grimaldi scored his second goal.
