
Sallie was born 1932 in New Britain, CT, the daughter of Alvar and Marjorie (Luce) Johnson. She grew up in Kensington, CT, graduating 1950 from Berlin High School. While in high school, she took part in many activities, including cheerleading, baseball, basketball, the Girl’s Leader Corps, the Traffic Squad, and the class yearbook. She was also chosen Most Popular Gal and Class Wit.
After high school, she entered a 3-year nursing program at Middlesex Memorial Hospital, Middletown, CT, becoming an RN in 1953. Later, Sallie became a Certified Alcoholism Counselor and eventually received her Masters of Education at Cambridge College in Cambridge, MA.
In 1952, she married George H. Pollard of Berlin, CT. Upon his discharge from the submarine service, they moved to Providence, RI while Mr. Pollard attended Brown University. They lived many years in Wilbraham, MA as well as Bath, ME. They were married for 52 years before George’s passing in 2004. Together they had 3 children: Jeffrey, Carrie and Thomas.
Ms. Pollard worked in the mental health field, was an emergency room nurse, and worked in a detoxification center in Springfield, MA. While there, she administered an assertiveness training group for women in recovery. In 1985, she worked to develop and administer an alcoholism treatment program for the Western Mass Correctional Alcohol Center on Howard Street, Springfield, MA. This was the second such program to open in the country.
In 1988, Sallie and her husband moved to Bath, ME where they owned and operated the Fairhaven Inn. She was an active member of the Bath Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, and Garden Club as well as the Bath Forestry and E911 committees.
Sallie is remembered for her contagious laugh, her energy and spunk, and her sparkling blue eyes. Cardinals reminded her of Puz and Jeff. She loved Black- Eyed Susans and goldfinches. She is survived by her sister, Marian Pinches of NH, her daughter, Carrie Donoghue and husband Jim, and her son, Thom and his former wife, Kristin. She has 2 nieces, Nancy Kane and Beth Brown, and 4 nephews, Charles and Richard Pinches, and Matt and Zack Parker. She has 4 grandchildren whom she cherished and was so very proud of: Eliza and Trevor Donoghue, and Will and Sam Pollard. Her beloved dog, Teddy, is hanging in New Hampshire with Thom and his dog, Bud.
Interment is to be later at the Church of the Epiphany’s columbarium in Wilbraham, MA alongside her husband and son.
