PORTLAND
Maine’s Republican U.S. Senator says she will give President Barack Obama’s nominee to replace former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia her “ full attention” when it’s time.
The Portland Press Herald reports Sen. Susan Collins says she believes there will be enough time for a full discussion about Scalia’s replacement after his funeral. She says a period of mourning should pass before debate begins.
Scalia’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday. He died at a Texas ranch on Feb. 13, leaving a Supreme Court vacancy during Obama’s final year as president.
Several Republican leaders say Obama shouldn’t name a replacement for Scalia, who was an ardent conservative. Democrats have in turn accused the Republicans of failing to respect the Constitution.
Maine independent Senator Angus King says Obama must make a nomination.
