Boys

Dave DeLois, who coaches the Brunswick track teams along with Morse athletes, made a tactical decision to keep Shipbuilders long-distance runner Walfield out of the one mile and 4×800 relay, putting all of his eggs into the two-mile.

Walfield delivered, cruising to a four-second win over Freeport’s Henry Jaques, who finished in 9:54.70.

“He ran a great race,” said DeLois of Walfield. “Chris, Jaques and (Yarmouth’s) Luke Laverdiere ran together the whole way, and on that last lap with about 250 to go, Chris picked it up and just out-kicked everybody. I am proud of him. Nothing better than winning a state championship!”

The second-place finish by Jaques gave the Falcons eight of their points. Other point-getters for Freeport were the 4×800 relay team (Max Greenwood, Ben Cushman, Joe Ashby, Erik Brobst, fifth, 8:52.39), Chandler Vincent (third, one-mile, 4:38.39) and Brobst (seventh, one-mile, 4:51.22).
