Julie Wescott’s Greyhounds have done well defensively all season, allowing under 38 points a game, so finding an offense, which averages just north of 34 points, has been an issue.
Wednesday’s 37-21 Mountain Valley Conference win over Wiscasset didn’t exactly boost 4- 6 Lisbon’s scoring average much, but the 14-2 start provided the defensively-strong Greyhounds a reason to feel confident.
“We have been doing better in practice and taking advantage of the defense, concentrating on finishing, something we’ve had trouble doing all season,” said Wescott after watching her team shoot 50 percent (six of 12) in the opening quarter.
“Alexa gets fired up and it’s important to get her some early shots to give her some confidence,” said Wescott, who also received eight points from Bailey Madore.
“We’ve been losing a lot of games where we just didn’t score, and the first quarter was big in giving us some momentum,” said Harmon, who added two steals to her totals. “We needed to keep our momentum going, and we were able to do that. Coach pumped us up in the locker room, and we want to keep winning and carry this into our next game (Friday at home against Hall-Dale).”
What a start
Harmon gave Lisbon a quick 3-0 lead, taking a pass from Jess Campbell and swishing a shot from the corner. Campbell added four points during the game-opening 10-0 run, with Harmon hitting her second trey.
Wiscasset (1-10) center Kayla Connors got the Wolverines on the board after coach Patrick Quinn called a timeout, but Denise Thomas and Madore scored moments later to give the Greyhounds a 14-2 advantage.
“Our defensive energy feeds off of us scoring, and when we don’t score it is hard to find that energy,” said Quinn, whose team is slated to host Winthrop on Friday. “I thought the second group (Kayla Gordon, Miranda McIntire, Alecia Faulkingham) did a good job with our press and created a lot more steals, but Lisbon played harder than us in the beginning and that was the difference.”
Wiscasset slowly crept back into the game, finishing the opening frame on a 6- 0 run behind three points from Briana Goud and another bucket from Connors despite shooting just 20 percent (three of 15) in the first eight minutes.
The teams traded baskets throughout the first half of the second quarter, with Lisbon holding an 18- 12 lead with 4: 17 left. But, the Greyhounds ran off the final six points on buckets by Haley Eck, birthday girl Jen Smith and Denise Thomas for 24-12 halftime edge.
“I thought we were going to get back into it as well, but you have to string baskets together and we just didn’t do that,” said Quinn, who watched as Harmon nailed a third 3- pointer for a 27- 14 lead just one minute into the third quarter.
Lisbon slowly pulled away, taking a 33-17 lead to the fourth quarter.
Wiscasset struggled with its shooting, making just seven of 45 shots (15 percent) from the floor. Goud and Connors led the Wolverines with six points apiece, with Kasey Cromwell scoring all five of her points in the second half. Cromwell had five rebounds, two steals and two assists, while Connors pulled down eight caroms.
Thomas, Campbell, Eck and Sarah Giraldo each scored four points for balanced Lisbon, which was 17 of 53 (32 percent) from the floor. Thomas had a game-high 10 rebounds, while Campbell finished with five rebounds, three blocked shots, three assists and three steals.
Wiscasset was seven of 13 from the foul line, while Lisbon missed its three chances at the charity stripe.
