Brunswick police have charged a man they believe is behind a half-dozen “peeping Tom” incidents reported in the Bowdoin College area last fall.

Stephen L. McIntire, 55, of Bath, has been charged with six counts of the Class D violation of privacy. He is currently being held at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset on unrelated charges.

Brunswick Police Cmdr. Mark Waltz said there were about a dozen total peeping tom incidents reported from late August through November. Some were reported to police and some only to the college.

The release stated that the new charges are based on “non-consensual videos of adults inside their residences that were captured through the windows.”

“Some residences were off-campus and some were on campus,” according to the release. “All identifiable individuals who were videotaped have been notified, but out of concern for the victims we will not release further descriptions.”

Waltz declined to say anything further about the nature of the videos in order to protect the victims.

Bath Police Department’s investigation into an unrelated incident yielded a lead which assisted Brunswick police with its own investigation.

McIntire was arrested by Bath police late last November after it was alleged a 28- year-old woman came home to find a man sitting on her couch exposing himself. She ran upstairs and secured herself in the bedroom, retrieved a handgun for protection and called 911. A police dog led police from the scene to McIntire’s residence.

A search warrant was issued allowing officers to search his residence where evidence was seized linking him to the crime, according to the press release issued by Bath police. McIntire was charged with Class C burglary and aggravated criminal trespass, Class D criminal threatening, and Class E theft and indecent conduct. McIntire was arraigned on Nov. 24 when his bail was increased to $10,000 cash. He also was still being held for a probation violation at Two Bridges as of Monday.

According the West Bath District Court, McIntire is scheduled for a dispositional conference on Feb. 17.

Waltz said no court date has been scheduled regarding Brunswick’s charges against McIntire.

As a result of a sketch composite police released related to the reported Nov. 10 sexual assault of a Bowdoin College student on Belmont Street, police received a number of tips and McIntire was identified not as a suspect but a person of interest. The incident remains under investigation.

“Last fall’s ‘peeping Tom’ incidents as well as the reported sexual assault on Belmont Street and two other reported incidents on Potter and Longfellow streets are concerning but atypical for Brunswick,” the press release states. “Considerable resources have been and continue to be employed to investigate these cases.”

In addition to Bath police, Bowdoin College Safety and Security, the Maine Department of Corrections and the Maine Computer Crimes Task Force also assisted.
