The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency arrested a Lewiston man Thursday on charges of possessing and dealing heroin.
Macarthur Taylor, 40, of Lewiston, faces three counts: aggravated drug trafficking, drug posession and trafficking in prison contraband.
A news release from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said Taylor was arrested at his Bates Street apartment without incident.
McCausland said that, over the past year, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff ’s Office and the Bath Police Department conducted an investigation into “the illegal distribution of heroin between Lewiston and the Bath area.”
Agents conducted a number of undercover heroin purchases from Taylor, several allegedly taking place in designated drug-free “safe zones” near schools.
Taylor was transported to the Androscoggin County Jail, where police said correction officers discovered a quantity of heroin on him.
Agents also conducted a search warrant of Taylors’ apartment, and police said a number of items indicative of drug trafficking were seized. The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are anticipated, McCausland said.
McCausland said Taylor’s bail was set at $100,000, “due to the seriousness of his charges and his extensive criminal history in New York.”
