Topsham will go without a fire chief a little longer after officials decided to restart the hiring process.
The town’s former fire chief, Brian Stockdale, left the department at the end of July to become chief in Lewiston.
Topsham Town Manager Rich Roedner said the town received 18 applicants for the position and the pool was whittled down to two.
While both candidates were strong, neither ad all of the qualities the town is seeking in a new fire chief, Roedner said.
“We decided we’d take a step back, reevaluate what it is we’re looking for, and then re-advertise,” Roedner said. “We will hire as soon as we can.”
Deputy Chief Mike Labbe will continue working with existing department staff in the interim.
