BRUNSWICK
A Vinalhaven man was arrested Thursday after allegedly assaulting two Brunswick police officers who were removing him from a Maine Street restaurant.
Cmdr. Tom Garrepy said police were called to Joshua’s Restaurant and Tavern at 11:40 p.m. According to Garrepy, Gregory A. Hopkins, 42, was argumentative and “refused to leave the establishment in his intoxicated state.”
“He was taken to the ground by officers while he was actively resisting,” Garrepy said. “Officers were able to gain control of him and he was restrained with handcuffs.”
According to Garrepy, Hopkins allegedly kicked officer Christopher Balestra in the face while officers attempted to place Balestra in the cruiser.
Then, as officers worked to secure him, Hopkins swung his knees up, allegedly striking Lt. Paul Hansen’s head, Garrepy said.
Hopkins was charged with two counts of Class C felony assault on an officer. He was also charged with refusing to submit to arrest or detention, a Class D misdemeanor, and criminal trespass, a Class E misdemeanor.
Hopkins was taken to Cumberland County Jail in Portland and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Portland Dec. 19.
