FALMOUTH

State Police say a man was killed Tuesday night in a two car crash on Interstate 295 in Falmouth.

The rear end collision took place at approximately 7 p.m. in the northbound lanes by exit 10. Troopers said the man who died was driving a car that was struck from behind by a second vehicle.

The victim, a man in his 30s, died at the scene. The other driver, a teenage girl, was not injured.

All Northbound lanes and one southbound lane were shut down as the crash was investigated. The lanes were reopened at 10 p.m.

The names of the drivers were expected to be released this morning.

UPDATE:

State police say killed in the crash was 36-year-old Joshua Martin of North Yarmouth. He died when his 2005 PT Cruiser was struck from behind  by a 2007 Volvo Cross Country as traffic was slowing down for another crash a short distance away, according to Trooper Robert Burke.

The Volvo was driven by a 17-year-old girl from West Bath. She had minor injuries and was taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick by her parents.

Burke asks that anyone who witnessed the crash and not spoken to police to call State Police in Gray at 657-3030.

Troopers, Falmouth police and state Department of Transportation workers were able to turn hundreds of vehicles around stuck in the traffic backup. They were able to travel south in the northbound lane and take the crossover at the Falmouth-Portland line. This was after a detour was set up in Portland to prevent any other vehicles from entering the northbound lane.

Approximately 50 vehicles were not able to be turned around, including a number of tractor trailers due to their length.

Troopers said weather likely was not a factor in the crash as they continue their investigation.
