GREENVILLE, SC — Hope C. Martel 89, passed away Friday, August 18, 2017 in Greenville, South Carolina. Hope was born October 28, 1927 in Rangeley to Rev. William H. and Olive J. (Mudgett) Johnson. She attended school in Greene and Springvale and graduated from Sanford High School.

Hope spent her summers in Harpswell, Maine in a small cottage on Basin Point. She enjoyed her time during her childhood with her lifelong friend Gladys (Brown) Robertson. The two young blondes used to walk for miles, disappearing for hours at a time. They often would walk to get the Mail from the Mail Boat in South Harpswell while singing ” The Old Lamplighter”.

Hope attended Farmington State Teachers college and graduated from Rumford Community Nursing School.

In May of 1988 she married Leon P. Martel in Ocala, FL.

She spent most of her life in Brunswick , Maine, as an R.N. She was kind hearted and often would talk about her various Nursing experiences.

She and Leon moved to Ocala and Leesburg FL, returning to Maine in 2005. She enjoyed volunteering while in Florida at the Regional Ocala Hospital and at Senior Friends. She also enjoyed collecting Sea Shells and scrapbooking and had a lifelong relationship with God. A devote Christian, she used to attend Sunday school classes for Adults.

She was predeceased by her husband Leon P. Martel in 2002.

She is survived by her six children, Gregory Lobikis (Cynthia) of Brunswick, Richard Winn (Kathy) of Colorado Springs, CO, Gayle Murray (Brad) of Gloucester, MA, Katherine Cloutier (Will) of Topsham, Marcia Auriemma (Tom) of Lisbon Falls and Phyllis Toner (Mike) of Greenville, SC, 13 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

A future service will be determined and announced.
