St. Joseph’s shuts out NEC in women’s soccer, 2-0
Hannah Leblanc scored the go-ahead goal in the 49th minute and Danielle Daigle added a goal eight minutes later to lead St. Joseph’s (1-3) to a 2-0 women’s soccer win over New England College (4-1) on Sunday afternoon in Henniker, New Hampshire.
Marina Cameron made four saves to record the shutout for the Monks.
• Taylor Caparo scored just 10 seconds into the game and Northeastern (3-2-1) added three goals over the final 50 minutes to pull away for a 4-0 win over Maine (1-5) in Orono.
Elise Applegate finished with seven saves for the Black Bears, who were outshot 22-5.
• Despite having a 37-9 advantage in shots, Southern Maine Community College (1-1-1) played to a 0-0 draw against Hampshire (0-0-2) in South Portland.
MEN’S SOCCER: Connor Gibbs scored in the 40th minute to give Endicott (2-3) the lead, and the Gulls added an insurance goal midway through the second half in a 2-0 victory over St. Joseph’s (1-4) at Standish.
Scott Benner and Robert Petrosillo each played one half in goal for the Monks and made three saves apiece.
• Steve Rwendeye opened the scoring in the 32nd minute and Jack Carter added a goal late in regulation to lift Southern Maine Community College (1-3) to a 2-0 win over Hampshire (0-1-1) at South Portland.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: Brittney Griner set the tone for a dominating Phoenix performance with a playoff record eight blocked shots – five in the first quarter – and the Mercury routed the visiting Chicago Sky 83-62 in Game 1 of the WNBA finals.
Griner also had 12 points and seven rebounds. Candice Dupree made her first 10 shots and scored 26 points for the Mercury in their 19th consecutive home win. Diana Taurasi added 19 points and 11 assists.
SOCCER
MLS: Charlie Davies scored the go-ahead goal in the 60th minute off a pass from Jermaine Jones, lifting the New England Revolution (12-12-3) to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Chicago Fire (5-7-14).
Auto racing
FORMULA ONE: Lewis Hamilton pressured Nico Rosberg into a mistake and overtook his Mercedes teammate to win the Italian Grand Prix, adding another chapter to their heated rivalry.
The key pass came about midway through the 53-lap race after Hamilton recovered from a poor start to pull up right behind Rosberg.
