Margaret “Margi” Sumner of Brunswick, Maine, passed away Wednesday August 9, 2017. Born in Newark, NJ on October 31, 1930 to Almira Marguerite Wagner Gordon and Joseph Dumville Gordon, Margaret grew up in Wellesley, MA. In 1953, she married Philip Edward Sumner, also of Wellesley.

Margi graduated from Wellesley College in 1952, and remained active with the Wellesley Club and Alumnae Association her entire life.

Margaret received her Master’s Degree from the University of Connecticut School of Social Work in 1977. She worked with Child and Family Services of Hartford, where she founded a program of therapeutic groups serving those in crisis.

Margi always actively served the communities in which she and her family lived. In Manchester, Connecticut, she was president of the Manchester Memorial Hospital Auxillary. She also served as Hartford Chapter President of Planned Parenthood as well as at the state level, and volunteered with the League of Women Voters and the Manchester Scholarship Foundation.

Upon their retirement to Orr’s Island, Maine, Margi volunteered at Midcoast Hospital and became President of the Hospital Auxiliary. She was active at St. Paul’s Church in Brunswick and All Saint’s Chapel on Orr’s Island. She also enjoyed involvement in the Orr’s Bailey Yacht Club, the Orr’s Island Library, and her Book Group.

Margaret is survived by her husband of 64 years, Philip, now of Brunswick, her son Philip Jr. and wife Traci Sumner of Clinton, NJ, her son Jeffrey and wife Lisa Sumner of Cincinnati, OH, and four grandchildren, Nicole Sumner of Brooklyn, NY, Matthew Sumner of Cincinnati, OH, Michelle Sumner of Boston, MA and Danielle Sumner of Washington DC, as well as her sister, Susan Mize of Santa Fe, NM.

Memorial services will be held at All Saint’s Chapel, Orr’s Island, ME, on Thursday, September 7 at 1:00 pm, with reception following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Saint’s Chapel, Orr’s Island ME, Orr’s-Bailey Fire and Rescue Dept., or the Dr. Philip E. and Margaret G Sumner Endowment Fund of Midcoast Hospital.
